Mookie Betts Scouting Report (CF, Boston Red Sox)

Mookie Betts

Positions: Second Base, Center Field and Shortstop
Bats: Right, Throws: Right
Height: 5' 9", Weight: 155 lb
Born: 10/7/1992
Drafted: 5th Round, in 2011 by the Red Sox, out of John Overton HS (Brentwood, TN)

Scouting Report

Mookie Betts has solidified the center field job for the Red Sox with an incredible Spring so far, in which he is hitting .487 in 41 PA, with 7 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HR, and 1 SB.  He has reached base 21 times out of the 41 times he stood in the box.  Betts is also making sparkling plays in center with his speed, despite his usual position being second base.

Betts is a small guy, barely topping 150 pounds, who has an amazing feel for the strike zone and put up one of the best BB:K ratios you will see in the minors (174 BB : 137 K).  Despite the small stature, he has surprising pop with 26 HR in 1,116 minor league AB.  He has also hit the most extra base hits in a Red Sox Spring Training (11) since Josh Reddick in 2010.  His latest Spring Training HR came off of Atlanta's ace, Julio Teheran.

Betts is the quintessential leadoff hitter, posting a .408 OBP in his 4 minor league seasons, and stealing 92 bases while getting caught only 15 times.  The main concern was his shift from second base (Dustin Pedroia occupies second) to the outfield and so far, the transition is relatively easy for this athletic kid.

I suspect Betts will be in the starting Boston lineup for years to come and will quickly become a fan favorite, if he hasn't already.

Tyrone Taylor Scouting Report (Brewers, OF)

Tyrone Taylor, OF

Brewers 20 2016
Grades: Hit: 60. Power: 45. Speed: 55. Defense: 70. Arm: 50.

Tyrone Taylor - Stats

Tyrone Taylor, currently the top prospect in the Brewers system according to Baseball America, is a potential 5 tool player who is trending in the right direction.  His walk rate has increased from his time in A ball in 2013 to his time in A Advanced in 2014, while his K rate has decreased.  His wOBA has hovered in the .340 area and he has shown the ability to steal a base.  When I look at Taylor, he seems like one of those players primed for a breakout season, where everything seems to fall into place.  I'll certainly be keeping an eye on him.

Ryan McMahon Scouting Report (Rockies, 3B)

95. Ryan McMahon

3b, Rockies -- 20 yrs old -- ETA: 2017
Grades: Hit: 50. Power: 60. Speed: 40. Defense: 50. Arm: 60.

McMahon has shown his plus power potential in his two years in the minors since being drafted in the second round in 2013 by the Rockies.  In 700 AB, McMahon has 64 doubles, 29 HR, and an OPS of .899.  His K rate is high at about 200 K's in those 700 AB, but his solid defense and ample power at a corner infield spot can move him up the Rockies ranks quickly, even though he is still only 20 years old.
I would give him a BUY/HOLD recommendation.

Kris Bryant Spring Training Updates #Cubs #Stud

2015 Stats1232111329154110.4060.4721.3131.785

Yes, Kris Bryant is good.  9 HR in 32 spring training AB equates to a full 500 AB season of 140 HR.  This equates to 700 HR after 5 years, with his 6th year breaking the all-time home run record.  At that 6th year, Bryant will still be under 30 years old and could have a chance at 2,000 home runs for his career.

Of course, I'm joking... but am I?  Bryant is tearing the cover off the ball, and he has everywhere he has played.  On Baseball Reference, we find an amazingly helpful stat for Bryant's Spring Training numbers called opponent's score.  This is the level of pitching he has faced in his current barrage of hitting power: and that level, out of 10, is a solid 8.7.  A full 10 is MLB quality pitching while an 8 is AAA, so we figure Bryant is facing on average some 4-A pitchers and borderline major leaguers.  This is a step up from the AAA batters he has faced in the past.

Bryant is amazing.  Along with Joc, he is a clear frontrunning candidate for NL Rookie of the Year, and his value in redraft leagues is through the roof, while his value in keeper leagues has reached untouchable status.

I have to join the crowd and say the sky is the limit for this elite hitter.  I hope he breaks camp as the Cubs' third baseman for years to come because Bryant is great for the game.  Heck, prospects are great for the game... and Bryant is more than just a regular prospect.

Joc Pederson Scouting Report #Dodgers CF Prospect - 2012 BC Auto - Strong Buy

From 1992 to 1996, the Dodgers won five Rookie of the Year honors in a row: Eric Karros, Mike Piazza, Raul Mondesi, Hideo Nomo and Todd Hollandsworth.  I suspect that they have another one in 2015 with center fielder Joc Pederson.

Joc is tearing it up this Spring, with a slash line of: .472/.513/.833 with 3 HR, 8 RBI, 8 strikeouts and 3 walks through 15 games and 39 plate appearances.  This is coming off an absolute monster campaign in AAA last year when the 21 year old hit .303 with 33 HR and 30 SB.  Over the past 3 years, check out these improvements:

2012: 10.2% BB Rate, .203 ISO, .400 wOBA, 137 RC+, 18 HR
2013: 13.5% BB Rate, .219 ISO, .398 wOBA, 155 RC+, 22 HR
2014: 18.1% BB Rate, .279 ISO, .439 wOBA, 164 RC+, 33 HR

Basically, the kid keeps getting better and has solidified himself as the Dodgers center fielder come Opening Day.  He is a beast, and his Bowman Chrome autos speak for themselves.  STRONG BUY!

Joc Pederson - 11th Rd 2010 Dodgers - STATS

Nomar Mazara Scouting Report #Rangers, OF - Strong Buy - 2012 Bowman Chrome Autograph

Nomar Mazara skipped over the High A Carolina League last year at the age of 19 (the last Rangers teenage prospect to skip over A+ was Jurickson Profar), and between A and AA, Mazara hit .271 with a .362 OBP and 53 extra base hits in 483 AB.  Skipping a teenager over high A ball means the Rangers have plenty of faith in the kid.  In his 85 at bats in AA, Mazara held his own with an .899 OPS.

Mazara improved in almost every category last year, despite the stiffer pitching he was facing.  His K rate decreased, his home run rate increased, his walks increased by 50%, and his defense improved in right field.  Mazara even converted a huge leg kick at the plate into a timing toe tap to stay in the proper hitting position.

If he continues to improve at his current rate, we can see Mazara atop the prospect lists next year, and in the majors sooner than you would think.  There isn't an outfield prospect I'd rather invest in right now than Mazara...

I highly recommend buying some of his 2012 BC Autos
