Bargain Bin - Rymer Liriano (OF, San Diego Padres)

Bargain Bin - Rymer Liriano (OF, SAN DIEGO PADRES)

The Padres have a pretty weak farm system, but one Padres Bowman Chrome auto peaks my interest...

Rymer Liriano (stats here) was on the brink of top prospect status before an elbow injury this February forced him to undergo Tommy John surgery.  Rymer Timer, as I like to call him, is only 22 and has serious five tool potential.  He's just one of those freaks of nature you have to see to understand.  He's jacked, he has a canon, and he's fast.  In his breakout 2011 campaign, he hit .319 - 12 HR - 66 SB in Low A before a late promotion to A+, where he struggled a bit.  The following year he adjusted nicely, performed well in A+, and got the promotion to AA, finishing the year with a solid .280-65-8-61-32 line in 465 ABs.  Then came the elbow injury...

Rymer's 2011 BC Auto has seen a wide range of values, from as low as $5 to as high as $20+.  If you read my blog often, you'll know I tend to stick with base autos as they're easier to follow, but in Liriano's case, I'm going a different route.  Tommy John surgery does not negatively impact hitters much, as history has shown.  So I believe in Rymer Timer.

The thing is, Rymer's base autos are hard to find, unless you want to sit on the few and far between auctions that may go off every now and then - or you want to overpay for Buy It Nows.  For that reason, I think it's worth a shot to seek out some color, graded, etc.  Liriano is the cheapest he can be and I wouldn't mind having a Gold 9.5/10 or a couple raw blues comfortably stashed in my collection.  Rather than waste your time nickel and diming on base autos, just spend the few extra bucks on one high end Rymer, put it in your drawer, and take it out a year from now.  Then when you do, feel free to thank me.
